Draft a commit or pull request

The commit box and the pull request dialog can draft their text with a coding-agent CLI you have installed: Generate commit message with … reads your staged changes, and Draft the title and description with … reads your branch’s commits. You review and edit the draft; nothing is committed or opened until you press the button.

Needs GitTree Pro or a running trial; Free keeps every local Git feature. Compare the plans.

Before you start

  • GitTree Pro or a running trial: drafting with AI is part of Pro.
  • Claude Code, Codex or the Antigravity CLI installed and signed in on this computer.

Where to find it

  • The button beside the commit message box; Draft the title and description with … in Start a Pull Request.

Steps

  1. Stage what the commit should hold

Stage the changes first; the draft is written from what is staged.

  2. Generate the message

Press Generate commit message with …, or Choose the AI agent to pick another. GitTree shows Writing the commit message…; Stop generating stops it.

  3. Review and commit

When … drafted a commit message. appears, read and edit the summary and description, then commit as usual.

Expected result

A commit or pull request whose words you checked, drafted from the real changes.

Pull request drafts

In Start a Pull Request, Draft the title and description with … writes both from the branch’s commits. If you already typed something, GitTree asks before replacing it. See Create a pull or merge request.

If something goes wrong

“Stage the changes this commit should contain first.”

Nothing is staged; stage files, hunks or lines and try again.

“… is not installed. Install it, or choose another agent in Preferences.”

Install and sign in to that CLI, or choose another agent.

Questions

Does the draft go anywhere before I commit?

The staged diff is sent to the agent CLI on your computer, which uses its own provider and policy. Nothing is committed or pushed until you do it.
