Git Tree is in active development. Downloads always come from the newest release on GitHub.
System requirements

- macOS 13 Ventura or later. Apple silicon (M1–M4) and Intel, in one universal app.
- Windows
- Windows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11, 64-bit. WebView2 is included with Windows 11.
- Linux
- Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later and Debian 12 or later, 64-bit (x86_64) only. Derivatives that ship WebKitGTK 4.1, such as Linux Mint 21+ and Pop!_OS 22.04+, can run it too; only Ubuntu and Debian are tested. Git Tree needs Git 2.39 or newer: Ubuntu 22.04 and Linux Mint 21 ship Git 2.34, so they need a newer Git first (see Installing on Linux below), while Ubuntu 24.04 and Debian 12 already have one that is new enough. Your tokens and passphrases are kept in the system keyring (freedesktop Secret Service: GNOME Keyring or KeePassXC).

Choose the installer for your system above.

On macOS, drag Git Tree to Applications. On Windows, run the installer. On Linux, install the .deb with apt or run the AppImage (details below).

Open a repository
Launch Git Tree and choose Open, Clone or Init. That’s it.
Installing on Linux
Ubuntu 22.04 and Linux Mint 21: get a newer Git first
They ship Git 2.34, and Git Tree needs Git 2.39 or newer, so run these three commands once. Ubuntu 24.04 and Debian 12 already have a Git that is new enough.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:git-core/ppa sudo apt update sudo apt install git.deb package (recommended for Ubuntu and Debian)
apt installs Git Tree together with Git, WebKitGTK and GTK. Run the command in the folder you downloaded to, with the file name you saved (for example Git-Tree_<version>_amd64.deb). Remove it later with sudo apt remove git-tree.
sudo apt install ./Git-Tree-Linux.debPortable AppImage
Make the file executable, then run it. It installs nothing on its own. Use the file name you saved.

Is the Mac version a universal app?
Yes. One download runs natively on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
Does Git Tree update itself?
Git Tree checks for new versions and tells you when one is available; you can switch the check off in Preferences. For now you install an update by downloading it from this page and opening it over the current version; on Linux, install the newer .deb the same way, or replace the AppImage file. Your settings and repositories are kept.
Is there a Linux version?
Yes. Git Tree runs on 64-bit (x86_64) Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and 24.04 LTS or later and Debian 12 or later, and it can run on derivatives that ship WebKitGTK 4.1, such as Linux Mint 21+ and Pop!_OS 22.04+ (only Ubuntu and Debian are tested). Download the .deb package (recommended) or the portable AppImage; the Linux page has the full install guide.
Which Linux download should I choose?
The .deb package is recommended on Ubuntu and Debian: apt installs Git Tree with the packages it needs and can remove it again. The AppImage is portable: make it executable and run it, without installing anything.
Why does Git Tree say my Git is too old on Ubuntu 22.04?
Git Tree needs Git 2.39 or newer, and Ubuntu 22.04 and Linux Mint 21 ship Git 2.34, so the app shows “This Git is too old”. Update Git from the Git PPA (sudo add-apt-repository ppa:git-core/ppa, then sudo apt update and sudo apt install git) and open Git Tree again. Ubuntu 24.04 and Debian 12 already have a Git that is new enough.
Are the Linux downloads signed?
No. The .deb and the AppImage are unsigned. To check your download, compare its checksum (sha256sum <file>) with SHA256SUMS.txt, which is attached to every release on GitHub.
