Review images and binary changes

Text diffs cannot show an image. When a PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP or other image changes, GitTree compares the before and after pictures: Side by side, Swipe or Onion skin. Other binary files show their sizes.

Before you start

  • A changed image is selected in your working changes or in a commit.

Where to find it

  • Image comparison above the image: Side by side, Swipe, Onion skin.

Steps

  1. Select the image

Choose the changed image file. GitTree shows the old and the new picture with their sizes in bytes.

  2. Choose a comparison

Side by side puts them next to each other. Swipe lays one on the other with a slider. Onion skin fades the new picture over the old one.

  3. Adjust it

Move Swipe position, or set After image opacity for the onion skin, to spot small changes.

Expected result

You see exactly what changed in the picture before you commit or review it.

Other binary files

For other binary files GitTree says Binary file — no text to compare and shows the sizes. An image that was added or deleted shows No file on the other side; one too large to show says so with its size.

If something goes wrong

“Too large to show”

The image is over the display limit. Open it with View File or in an external tool.

Questions

Can I stage part of an image?

No. Binary files are staged whole: stage or discard the file.
