Sign in from the desktop app

The desktop app signs in through the website. It opens the website in your browser; you sign in there with your email or a Git provider, and the browser opens GitTree again, signed in. If it does not, the page shows a one-time Authentication code to paste in the app.

Before you start

Where to find it

  • The page the app opens in your browser.

Steps

  1. Start in the app

When GitTree is not signed in, it shows Sign in to GitTree. Choose Sign in or Create account: your browser opens the GitTree website.

  2. Sign in on the website

Sign in with your email or a Git provider if the site asks. A request the app opened needs nothing more. A request that reached you another way (a link on a web page) asks Continue as … first: continue only if you just started it from the app.

  3. Return to the app

You’re signed in — return to GitTree: the browser opens the app; choose Open if it asks. If nothing happens, press Open GitTree, or copy the Authentication code into the app’s Manually enter authentication code field before it expires.

Expected result

The desktop app is signed in with your account.

If something goes wrong

“This sign-in request is not valid”

The link from the app is incomplete or was changed. Start signing in again from the app.

“This authentication code is invalid or has expired.”

Codes work once and expire after a few minutes. Press Get a new code on the page, or start signing in again from the app.

Questions

Will GitTree ever ask for this code by email or chat?

No. Enter it only in the GitTree app you started signing in from.
